What do they do?
The Manchester Museum is committed to helping people explore the natural environment and world cultures. It has one of the largest natural history collections in the UK, some of which can be seen on galleries devoted to the natural environment and people’s relationships with it including an award-winning Vivarium with live tropical frogs and reptiles. They have fossils, rocks and minerals and extensive archaeology and anthropology collection, including some of the finest Ancient Egyptian collections in the UK. Temporary exhibitions explore the natural world and human cultures.
What support is offered to schools?
Schools can run free self-led visits to immerse pupils in natural history and to visit the other galleries collections. They provide free on-line resources to support these visits. These can be full days or half days. For all the information on primary visits click here.
Secondary schools have similar visiting options - click here - but they also provide free advice and support on museum careers.
Recently the Museum ran a schools project called Carbon Ruins where they asked pupils to imagine a Museum for the Future and to choose which objects would be included to show how society has changed to reach zero carbon. These objects have been put on display and can be accessed on-line by clicking here.
